Character Workshop

One of the latest lessons I taught was a Character Creation Workshop, and it was so much fun! During the session, I guided the students through playful exercises designed to help them develop random characters from scratch.

The challenge was to think beyond just a face or a name: Who is your character? What do they do? What are their personality traits? Are they cheerful, shy, mischievous, or maybe a little quirky? Once the characters were created, the students explored how to move them, pose them, and bring them to life in different situations.

For my own exercise, I developed the cutest little lizard, completely enchanted by flowers 🌸. Seeing everyone’s creations come to life was inspiring, each character had its own charm, story, and personality.

Beyond movement, it’s important to be able to communicate expressiveness even when our visual language is simple or graphic. Our characters should be full of emotions and able to convey them clearly.

I would love the opportunity to develop a longer workshop, starting from character creation and moving all the way to story development and storyboard creation. There are endless possibilities for amazing results.
Workshops like this are a wonderful reminder of how much fun and creativity can flourish when you start with imagination first.
